The Infadels

If you can’t wait for the third album of Franz Ferdinand to finally come out, then I’ve got good news for you. Bringing dance and rock’n’roll together, this London-based quintet is the new breeze of fresh air the british capital has given birth to. They’re five, they’re young, they’re beautiful but, bad news for the ladies, they’re infadels. Interview with Matt Gooderson, the band’s guitarist.

In a few words, tell us who are the Infadels?

Infadels is about destroying the old and creating the new.

Your second album, Universe in Reverse, just hit the stores. Your music is a mix between rock’n’roll and electronic sounds, it sounds like you wanna try out every direction. How far would you like to go?

The first album was more electronic, but with Universe in Reverse, we wanted to push the rock’n’roll forward. The idea is to change the sound while remaining ourselves. We’re inspired by bands such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Prodigy or Radiohead.

It took 14 days to record the album, what an exploit! How did that happen?

The first album took 9 months to get recorded. After that we decided to go on tour and made more than 300 shows all over the world. Coming back from that hectic year, we wanted the second album to sound like it was live-based. Then we decided the first try would make it on the record, knowing this helped us keep the live mentality.

Each band has its one leader, the guy with a strong personality, the best good-looking face, the one speaking at interviews (…). Who’s yours?

We’re all equal on this matter, each member has its own personality and brings its piece to the puzzle.

Never been tempted by doing some DJ sets, something similar to a 2 many DJ’s for instance?

Yeah, we do actually. While touring, we got used to play live as the Infadels and finish the show with a DJ set.

Infadels started out as a hobby but time has proved you can consider yourself a legitimate band. What’s your plans for the future?

We don’t make plans. Ever since 9/11 the world is quite unstable, so we feel it’s more important to enjoy the present in each and every way.

You’ll be playing at the A! in October, are you ready to be overwhelmed by histeric groupies and drink beers until you completely forget why you’re in luxembourg?

Haha, in fact Bnann (Ed: the band’s singer) has developped kind of a new style while playing and it got some success – even if he got punched in the head and twisted his back the first time he did. Let’s see if that helps the party to take off.
