Interview Micromattic

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

When Christophe aka DJ No Side from Absolutive Records knocked at Luxuriant’s door we were so busy we didn’t have found enough time to get beers for the 6pm pause. Problem solved! This guy came not only with a good idea for a paper but with a sixpack too. He told us about Micromattic, the first signature on his label. We were so enthusiast when we saw these guys armed with Nintendo Wii remote controllers to make music we immediately decided to call Nikolay Seizov in London without further delay, just after opening a cold fresh beer.

So Nik, what is the wiivolution?

When I first discovered that the Nintendo Wiimote could be used to manipulate sound effects through gestural movements, logically the idea of destroying the “laptop stiff” techno dj stereotype came to mind. After all, going to see a live show of your favorite artist should offer something more than the sight of a human obelisk raised above the dance floor. Wiivolution wants to bring more fun to the stage, connect performers and fans and give more space for artistic expression.

Does it come from a kind of video games addiction too?

I hardly play any games at all. I don’t even own the Wii console. I have played a game on it only once at a friend’s house and ironically that was on the Wii Fit kit which helped me to improve my anorexic outlook!

Any video games’ soundtrack you would like to compose?

The next version of Myst. I am already hearing it in my mind. It is subtle, gloomy and perplexing, creating a contradictory atmosphere of tranquility and suspense at the same time, just like the game.

Any games’ character you would like to fuck?

Because personally I have a crush on Lara croft… (Laughs) No because developing affection for anything made out of zeroes and ones can’t fit even in my imagination.

Playing with your hands and feet, what’s next?

Nintendo is working on a game console with brain controller. The player would be able to navigate within the game with the power of his thought. So needless to say I am looking forward to see this controller being adapted to communicate with music software and plug the gap between sound design and imagination. I can’t wait to be able to put on a pair of semi transparent LCD screen goggles and a brain controller on my head all hooked up to a laptop in my backpack, so I can be essentially walking in the forest or riding my bike while working my next track. †
